I never went to camp as a kid. It was a different world when we were growing up, we spent summers outside with our friends, making up games in the street from early in the morning until night. We swam in our pools, we ran in the fire hydrants, we played sports in the streets and only went home when it was time to eat. I am still friends with most of the kids I grew up with, although I know that my circle of friendships has always been limited because I did not go to camp nor did I go away to college. Last year, my daughter got her first experience of camp, and she had mixed feelings of it.
Juliana was thrilled to spend the week with her friends, but a little melancholy to be at sleep away camp for a week. She missed us and thought constantly about what we were doing while she was enjoying time with her friends and the great outdoors. I asked her if she wanted to do it again, and she does not want to go away again this year. She did want to do a sports or arts camp, so I was on the lookout of where to send her. I know she also loves doing experiments and learning more about our environment, so I was hoping to find something that might incorporate all three.
I am thrilled that Juliana is going to have the opportunity to go to Oasis Camp in Bayside this summer for two weeks! What I love the most is that Oasis offers Camper Academies: Science Exploration, Engineering, and Fine Arts.
Juliana can attend up to 7 weeks, but I think we are just going to do two weeks this summer and see how she likes it. Believe it or not, I am also considering putting the twins in as well, if finances allow it. Oasis accommodates kids aged 4-14, and Juliana would see her brothers in the morning for a bit and during lunch, so I think they would enjoy it. I am just not certain they would stay full days at this point as they are still so attached to me!
Take a look at the Oasis Bayside brochure here. You can see info about all of the NY Oasis Camps on the main website.
